Deep TIssue Massage ( DTM ) uses slow, firm strokes and pressure to ease and release tension deep in your muscles. The techniques used help to improve circulation and can help prevent niggling injuries caused by overuse and exertion. Particularly useful for those complaining of general muscle aches and pains often caused by being desk bound or conversely a particularly manual job. Many people find a regular DTM can help to keep the muscles supple and painfree. Sports Massage is a more intense form of DTM with higher degrees of focused pressure used, the emphasis more on improving performance and function rather than just relaxing and easing tension. The therapist often focuses on a specific muscle groups to break down adhesions and scarring in the muscles to inprove performance.

Sports massage really focuses on the muscle performance and healing particularly after an event when recovery is all important. Sports massage is believed to stimulate circulation of blood and lymph fluids, but also uses many techniques including trigger point therapy to break down adhesion (knots in the muscles), myofascial release and stretching to increase the range of motion.

We get this question a lot! DTM is just that - a deep pressure that you are completely in control of. Your therapist will always ask you if the pressure that they are using is OK with you - if not, then please do say so. There is no ' right ' amount of pressure - only what is right for you. If the pressure isn't right for you then let your therapist know so they can adjust accordingly. We want you to enjoy your massage and feel you are benefiting. By it's very nature sports massage can be a little more uncomfortable as the pressure needs to be a little firmer to get the desired effect but again, the same rule applies - you are the boss and are incomplete control. If the pressure is too much ( or too little ! ) - just say so. We're good but we're not mind readers ..... please do tell us.

Yes, to optimise performance and assist recovery then it is best to arrange sessions around your sporting date. Pre-event Sports Massage - Prior to your sporting event, a sports massage will help your body respond well to the demands brought about by the increased activity and to encourage maximum performance on the day. The massage will improve flexibility, increase blood and nutrient supply to the muscles and help to maintain and increase joint mobility.. Post-event Sports Massage - After your sporting event, however extreme or easy it may have been for you, a Sports Massage should be performed as soon as possible. It will help to remove metabolic waste, which in turn will help speed up the venous and lymphatic supply to avoid the muscles becoming painful and tender, the dreaded DOMS !! This prevents stiffness, relieves tension, increases nutrients and oxygen to the muscles which will help to prevent fatigue and allow a faster recovery

As the pressure involved can be quite firm these massages are not suited for some people. Specifically : - Pregnancy - Bleeding or clotting disorders - Blood thinning or steroid medications - Recent cancer diagnosis or treatment If you are at all unsure then please contact us to discuss directly.
